Pioneers and Trojans share run-rule decisions

Pioneers and Trojans share run-rule decisions

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University softball team capitalized on five Anderson errors to earn a five inning run-rule win in game one (10-2), while the Trojans used 14 hits to give the Pioneers the same treatment (10-1).

This was just the second time that AU had been run-ruled on the season and the first in nearly two months. On the TU side, this marks the first time in the Julie Huebner-era (since 2013) that the Pioneers have split a doubleheader with both games ending in five innings via run-rule.

Tusculum (17-15, 11-9 SAC) has a day off before bringing in another conference foe in Newberry. The Pioneers and Wolves are set for a 2 p.m. first pitch.

Game 1: Tusculum 10, Anderson 2 (5 innings)
Claire Smeltzer went 2-for-2 with three RBI, one walk, and one run scored, while Anna Alloway was a triple shy of the cycle, including the game-ending home run in the bottom of the fifth. Anderson was sloppy defensively, tying a season-high five errors.

Anderson's lead-off batter reached in every inning, accounting for five of the team's seven hits. In the second, the Trojans used consecutive singles and a two-out walk to load the bases. The ball was hit toward Alexis Grampp at shortstop and a flip to Kiley Longmire at third ended the threat.

Tusculum was also able to pack the base path in its half of the inning. Longmire reached on AU's first fielding error of the afternoon and Hayley Lazo was hit by a pitch. The pair advanced on a wild pitch, followed by Smeltzer's one-out walk. TU was unable to break through as well.

The scoring floodgates were opened in the third inning. Anderson started off the frame with a triple, followed by a walk. The next batter grounded out and the lead runner was able to touch home.

TU notched eight runs in its half inning, only two of which were earned. Mya Maddox and Grampp began with back-to-back singles. Chloe Freischmidt reached on a fielder's choice, but Maddox was thrown out at third. Longmire hit a shot to second base and the shortstop dropped the toss, resulting in the bases being loaded. Emily Sappington stepped in and singled to left center to score two. Lazo plated Longmire with a single through the left side. Chaos ensued with Smeltzer's single. Sappington scored easily, but the Anderson right fielder had trouble collecting the ball, allowing Smeltzer to go to third. Running from first, Lazo kept moving due to the fielding snafu. With the ball in hand, the right fielder tossed the ball to the second baseman, who launched an errant throw to the catcher. Lazo was able to slide in for the fifth run of the frame. Brittney Franse plated Smeltzer with a single and Alloway brought home Franse on her double. After seven runs, AU changed pitchers as the Pioneers batted around. A Maddox ground out advanced Alloway to third and Grampp notched a RBI double.

Tusculum struck again in the fourth. Lazo singled down the left field line with two outs. Smeltzer popped up a ball that bounced out of the catcher's glove in foul territory. With new life, Smeltzer doubled in the hustling Lazo.

The Pioneers held an eight-run lead going into the fifth, needing just three outs to close out game one. Anderson had other ideas. The first three batters went single-walk-single to make the deficit seven, forcing TU to bat in the bottom half of the inning.

Alloway proceeded to launch a homer on the first pitch she saw, which stayed just fair of the left field foul pole.

Sappington (8-6) tossed her 12th complete game of the season in the 85-pitch victory. She struck out three, walked three, allowed two earned runs, and relented seven hits.

Game 2: Anderson 10, Tusculum 1 (5 innings)
The script was flipped in game two as the Trojans run-ruled the Pioneers in five innings.

Freischmidt and Lazo recorded the only hits for Tusculum, both of which came in the second inning. The catcher singled to lead-off the frame and the first baseman drove in her teammate as the lone run.

Of Anderson's 14 hits, 11 were singles. All 10 Trojans that came up to bat are credited with at least one hit. AU scored four in the first and fourth innings, while two crossed the plate in the third.

Keylon Reynolds (2-2) picked up the start and the loss after working two innings. She struck out one, walked a trio, allowed five hits, and three of the five runs that scored were earned. Savannah Foster entered in relief for 1.1 innings. She relented four earned runs on five hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts. Madison Michael pitched the final 1.2 innings of the day and was the lone pitcher to hold a team scoreless. She struck out one and the Trojans notched four hits against her.
