A native of South Bend, Indiana and a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Stayton attended Carson-Newman University where he was an All-South Atlantic Conference selection as a member of the Eagles' men's soccer team. He graduated from Carson-Newman in 1995 and gained experience with several radio outlets, including WLW in Cincinnati, Ohio where he worked with the Cincinnati Reds broadcast team.
