WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Tusculum University sprinter Widchard Guervil won three gold medals and was named Men's Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet as the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship concluded Sunday at the JDL Fast Track.

Guervil took gold in the 60 meters and 200 meters and ran the anchor leg of the Pioneers' winning 4x400-meter relay to help Tusculum to a sixth-place finish with 53 points. Zackary Nelson earned two gold medals for the Pioneers, winning the 400 meters and running in the 4x400 relay.

The Tusculum women finished ninth overall with 22 points, led by Kenisha Stubbs who was second in the 400 meters and fourth in the 60 hurdles.

Guervil and Nelson will compete at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, to be held March 11-12 in Pittsburg, Kansas.

MEN'S RECAP
Guervil was the top seed in the finals in both the 60 meters and 200 meters after preliminaries on Saturday. He began the day by winning gold in the 60 meters with a time of 6.80 seconds, then followed by winning the 200 meters in 21.74 seconds. Guervil closed out the meet by running the anchor leg in the 4x400 relay that set a meet record with a time of 3:21.50.

Guervil entered the meet with four previous medals at the SAC Indoor Championships, including a gold in the 60 in 2018, but finished first in all four individual races this weekend. Guervil has run in 11 events this season, and has nine wins and two second-place finishes. In 19 heats this season, Guervil has finished first 18 times including 11 wins in 11 heats of the 60 meters.

Nelson earned gold with a time of 48.49 seconds, breaking the SAC record in the 400 meters of 49.04 seconds which he set while earning the top seed during preliminaries on Saturday. Nelson also finished fifth in the 200 meters at 22.19 seconds and was the third leg in the Pioneers' winning 4x400 relay.

The 4x400 relay of Jarvis Barber Jr., Stephen Brewer, Nelson and Guervil earned gold by .53 seconds over Lenoir-Rhyne, and broke the meet record of 3:22.31 set by Catawba in 2020.

Also earning points for the Pioneers were Gerard Hearst, who took fourth in the 60 meters at 6.92 seconds after earning an NCAA qualifying time of 6.86 seconds in Saturday's prelims, and Brewer who finished fifth in the 400 meters at 50.33 seconds.

Queens won the team championship with 160 points, followed by Limestone (89.5 points), Wingate (85.5), Lenoir-Rhyne (85) and Carson-Newman (74.5) in the top five. Trailing Tusculum were Catawba in seventh with 40 points, followed by Lincoln Memorial (34 points), Newberry (26), Mars Hill (8) and Anderson (7).

WOMEN'S RECAP
Stubbs earned a silver medal in the 400 meters with a time of 58.67 seconds, and took fourth in the 60 hurdles with a school-record time of 9.11 seconds. She also ran as part of the 4x400-meter relay with I'Keriah Day, Destiny Lottie and Silvia Bah which took fifth place in 4:05.81.

In the shot put, Shanee Angol finished 18th with a throw of 9.95 meters (32 feet, 7 3/4 inches) and Amber Hogan was 20th at 9.70 meters (31 feet, 10 inches).

Queens was the team champion with 160 points, followed closely by Lenoir-Rhyne with 154.5 points. Wingate was third with 100.5 points, followed by Anderson (65 points), Carson-Newman (36) and Limestone (32) in the top half of the standings. Catawba (28 points) was seventh, trailed by Lincoln Memorial (23 points), Tusculum in ninth, Coker and Newberry (20 points) tied for 10th and Mars Hill (1) in 12th.
