SUMTER, S.C. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team advanced three players to the third round of singles on the opening day of the ITA Southeast Regional Championship at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
In the opening round of singles, Anton Krondell earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Charlie Fremaux of Belmont Abbey. Will Gee picked up a 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 win over Alexis Bailhache of Augusta, and Rens Verhaar had a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Carlson Lim of Francis Marion.
In the second round, Gee defeated Gjorgji Jankulovski of Carson-Newman 7-5, 6-3 to move into the Round of 32. Verhaar claimed a 6-3, 7-5 win over Luka Sauer of Georgia College, and Krondell downed Gabriel Cizek of Georgia College 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) to join Gee and Verhaar in the Round of 32.
Also in the first round, Yuki Ikeda fell 6-2, 6-2 to Thom Hermans of Lincoln Memorial and Miles Ray dropped a 6-7 (8-10), 6-2, 6-4 result to Felix Steen of Columbus State. Both Ikeda and Ray will compete in the consolation bracket on Saturday.
In doubles, Gee and Ray beat Fremaux and Zak Vince of Belmont Abbey 8-3 in their opening match, moving them into the round of 32 along with teammates Nemanja Subanovic and Marco Jalalian, who had a first-round bye.
Action will continue on Saturday with Round of 32 doubles at 8 a.m., Round of 16 doubles at 10 a.m., singles consolation matches at 11 a.m. and Round of 32 singles at 2:30 p.m.
