Tusculum teams open with fourth place finish at Hyder McMahill Invitational

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. --- The Tusculum College cross country teams each posted a fourth place finish at the 2016 Hyder McMahill Invitational held at the Montreat College Cross Country Course.

The Pioneer men and women each finished in fourth place out of six teams, with the men accumulating 102 points and the women tallying 90 points.

WOMEN'S RESULTS
Freshman Emily Stoklosa was the top finisher for the Pioneers, placing fifth with a time of 21:11.2 over the 5-kilometer course. Makenzi Alley also had a strong season debut, crossing the line 13th in 22:11.6. Mackenzie Newsome also reached the top 20 in the final standings for Tusculum, coming home 20th in a time of 22:34.3.

Rounding out the scoring for the Pioneers were freshman Brooklyn Smith, who was 28th in 23:41.2, and Deondra Thomas, who placed one spot behind in 29th with a time of 23:46.8. Ashley Andrukonis finished 30th in a time of 23:52.4, and Pauline Muiruri crossed the line 34th in 24:01.4.

Tennessee Wesleyan won the team event with 29 points, with five finishers in the top 10. Spartanburg Methodist (62 points) was second, with host Montreat edging out Tusculum for third via tiebreaker.

MEN'S RESULTS
Jacob Cutshall led the Pioneers with a seventh-place finish in the 5-kilometer race, posting a time of 17:14.5 that was less than a minute behind the race winner. Freshman Thomas Veerkamp joined Cutshall in the top 10, finishing ninth in 17:22.5.

J'Quen Johnson was 21st for the Pioneers in 17:50.0, followed by freshman Matthew Mayes in 32nd place with a time of 18:39.4. Will Noel was the fifth scorer for the Pioneers, coming across in 19:45.8 and taking 45th place.

Led by race winner Jacob Burgamy, Emmanuel won the team competition with 34 points, followed by Montreat (51 points), Tennessee Wesleyan (67) and Tusculum.

The Pioneers will return to action next Friday, Sept. 9 when they host the Tusculum Open on the cross country course at Holston Home for Children in Greeneville.
