Cooper earns second straight All-Region honor at Southeast Region meet
CHARLOTTE, N.C. ---

Tusculum College junior David Cooper earned All-Region honors for the second straight year as the Pioneers competed at the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Men's and Women's Cross County Championship meet Saturday morning at McAlpine Creek Park, hosted by Queens University of Charlotte.

Cooper finished 24th in the men's 10-kilometer meet with a time of 32:41.4 to gain All-Region status. He was in 37th place after 3.6 kilometers and moved up to 29th place at the 7-kilometer mark. Cooper ran the final three kilometers in just over 10 minutes to climb five more spots into 24th place, just inside the top-25 threshold to claim All-Region status. Cooper's finish was fourth-best among the South Atlantic Conference entrants in the field.

In the Women's race, freshman Samantha Johns crossed the line 57th overall in the 6-kilometer race to help the Pioneers to a 29th-place finish. Johns finished 14th among all freshmen in the race with a time of 24:12.9. She ran in the top 60 throughout the race and ranked 14th among South Atlantic Conference competitors in the field.

Other finishers for the Pioneers were sophomore Maggie Bernabei, who was 132nd overall with a time of 26:11.8, sophomore Paige Bible who was clocked in 28:21.2 for 176th place and senior Kim Brown who was one spot behind Bible in 177th place at 28:21.7.

Junior Ashley Gregg was the fifth and final scorer for the Pioneers, posting a time of 28:42.1 for 185th place. Sophomore Allison Hall crossed the line in 191st place in 29:46.6 and junior Lakesa Hendrix was clocked in 31:37.9 for 205th place in the field.

Joining Cooper in the men's race for the Pioneers was sophomore Lawson Burrow, who finished 119th overall with a time of 35:52.6.

Mount Olive won the men's team championship with 53 points, including individual champion Dylan Lafond, followed by King with 102 points and GRU Augusta with 104 points. Mars Hill was fourth with 110 points and Columbus State finished fifth with 170 points.

Wingate claimed the Women's regional title with 75 points, followed by Flagler with 107 points and Columbus State with 130 points. Hannah Witt of King won the individual championship with a wire-to-wire victory by a margin of nearly 26 seconds.
