Pioneers step up to run at VMI Invitational
BUENA VISTA, Va. ---

The Tusculum College men's and Women's cross country teams competed against a field consisting entirely of members of the Division I Big South Conference when they ran Saturday morning at the VMI Invitational.

The meet was held at the Vista Links Golf Course just outside Lexington, and the Pioneer men finished ninth and the women 10th at the invitational, which serves as the preview meet for the Big South Championships on Nov. 2.

For the men, junior David Cooper was the top finisher as he took 58th place with a time of 30:02.85 across the 8-kilometer course. Junior Zachary Simpson claimed 69th place in 31:24.06, followed by sophomore Lawson Burrow in 75th place at 32:24.80.

Freshman Cory Ramsey was 78th in 35:24.37, with fellow sophomore Isaac Ringley the final scorer for the Pioneers with a time of 39:02.47, good for 79th place in the standings.

The Pioneer women were paced by freshman Samantha Johns, who was timed at 21:08.40 for the 5-kilometer race and claimed 51st place in her first collegiate run. Sophomore Maggie Bernabei was 72nd in 22:36.36, with sophomore Paige Bible in 87th place at 24:56.94.

The final point scorers for the Pioneers were junior Ashley Gregg, whose time of 25:41.87 was 89th overall, and senior Kim Brown who was 90th in 26:19.54.

The men's meet saw Liberty claim the top four individual finishers and earn the team title with 19 points, followed by High Point (51) and Campbell (93). Fourth place was VMI at 115 points, with the rest of the field consisting of Coastal Carolina (121), Radford (180), UNC Asheville (187), Longwood (197) and the Pioneers (280). Caleb Edmonds of Liberty was the men's individual race winner in a time of 26:12.77.

In the Women's competition, Coastal Carolina won the team championship with 43 points, ahead of Liberty (53) and High Point (63). Campbell was fourth at 94 points, followed by UNC Asheville (139), VMI (174), Radford (182), Charleston Southern (213), Longwood (278) and the Pioneers (300). Letitia Saayman of Coastal Carolina was the individual winner with a time of 18:18.

Tusculum will be off next weekend before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Greater Louisville Classic.
