Cooper earns All-Region honors at NCAA Southeast Regional
CHARLOTTE, N.C. ---

Tusculum College sophomore David Cooper earned All-Region honors at the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Cross Country Championship meet Saturday at McAlpine Creek Park.

Cooper finished 19th on the 10,000-meter course with a time of 32:42.2 to become just the second Tusculum male runner to earn All-Region status. Simon Holzapfel was a three-time All-Region athlete for the Pioneers from 2008 to 2010.

The top 20 runners in the region are recognized on the All-Region team, and Cooper finished just under eight seconds ahead of the cutoff mark to claim the honor. Cooper shaved 60 places and nearly 90 seconds off his region result from last year.

The Tusculum men finished 22nd in the region meet with a total of 536 points, while the Pioneer women took 26th place and totaled 655 points.

For the men, freshman Lawson Burrow took 73rd place with a time of 34:36.8, followed by sophomore Zachary Simpson in 137th place in 37:23.8. Junior Elijah Minter was 151st overall in a time of 39:06.6, and sophomore George Blalock was the final scorer for the Pioneers as he placed 166th with a time of 43:47.2.

Columbus State won the team title with 63 points, and will be joined at the NCAA Division II championship meet by runner-up Mount Olive (77 points) and King (91). UNC Pembroke senior Pardon Ndhlovu was the individual race winner with a time of 31:19.2, over 30 seconds ahead of the King duo of Spencer Frantom and Jordan Noe.

In the Women's race, freshman Maggie Bernabei was the Pioneers' top finisher as she covered the 6,000-meter course in 26:03.2 and finished 105th overall. Senior Jenny Grant set a career best in the 10k with a time of 26:25.2 that placed her 115th, and freshman Allison Hall was 153rd in 27:41.4. Rounding out the scoring for the Pioneers were freshman Paige Bible in 157th place (28:02.1) and sophomore Ashley Gregg in 161st place (28:25.9).

Columbus State made it a clean sweep of the team championships as they won the Women's title with 87 points, ahead of fellow NCAA qualifiers Clayton State (99 points) and UNC Pembroke (105). Montevallo senior Kaley Glover won the individual championship in a time of 22:40.4, finishing 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Keeley Wood of Wingate.
