Freshman David Cooper shines for Pioneers in season-opening race at Guiford

GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Tusculum freshman David Cooper finished 11th in the men's meet of the 2011 Guilford College Cross Country Festival, held Saturday morning on the Guilford campus.

The Tusculum men finished fifth with 117 points, while TC women's squad placed seventh (176 points). Host Guilford won the men's title with 45 points, while NCAA Division I UNC Greensboro captured the women's meet with a near-perfect score of 18 points.

Cooper finished the 5,000-meter race for the Pioneers in 17:09.34 and was the third fastest NCAA II runner on Saturday. TC's Zachary Simpson finished 23rd with a time of 18:32.45, while Elvis Machado finished at 19:28.18 for 27th place. Kekona Soon placed 31st with his time of 20:00.12, while Elijah Minter (20:40.65) and George Blalock (21:06.94) finished 32nd and 36th, respectively.

Winston-Salem State's Andrew Chebii-Singh won the men's race with a time of 15:47.29.

In the women's meet, Jenny Grant was the top Tusculum finisher with her 5K time of 24:20.87. Lakesa Hendrix finished 34th in her collegiate debut in 25:47.17. Ashley Gregg posted a time of 26:14.36 for 37th place, while Kim Brown finished in a time of 27:17.62 for 41st. Ashley Andrukonis finished 46th at 29:19.42, while Lizzie Kaster placed 48th at 29:39.17.

Kelly Montague of UNC Greensboro won the women's meet with a time of 19:50.99 as the Spartans had six of the top eight runners.

The Pioneers return to action next Saturday as they compete at the Lenoir-Rhyne University Invitational in Newton, N.C.
