GRAY, Tenn. --- Tusculum College junior Simon Holzapfel won his fourth individual cross country title this season in as many races at the Trailblazer Invitational Saturday morning. Holzapfel won with a school-record time of 26:17.33 on the 8,000-meter course as the Pioneers finished third in the team competition with 56 points.
In the women's race, graduate student Robin Smith finished fourth with a 5K time of 22:22.75 as the Tusculum women placed third in the team title chase with 59 points.
Rookie David Parham placed seventh in the men's meet with a time
of 29:16.87. Ben Hale posted a time of 31:20.32 to finish 18th,
while Elvis Machado placed 25th with a time of 36:27.19. Tyler
Buckner (37:50.26) and Jason Seaton (40:31.36) finished 26th and
27th, respectively.
Senior Katie Shelton finished fifth in the women's meet with a time
of 22:40.56, while junior Jessica Figler posted a time of 26:34.54
to finish 20th. Kelsey Longwell finished 21st with a time of
27:21.10, while rookie Josie Honaker posted a 23rd place finish
with a time of 28:40.20. Senior Estefania Chavez (28:47.81) and
freshman Storm Vance (36:04.27) rounded out the Tusculum scoring
finishing 24th and 28th, respectively.
Holzapfel's school record time surpassed the previous mark of 26:20
he established last year at the Lenoir-Rhyne University
Invitational. The Nuremberg, Germany native has now won a school
record nine individual titles for his career and owns eight of the
best 10 running times (8K) in school history, including the top
six.
Tusculum will compete at next Saturday's Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship in Newton, N.C.
