WINGATE, N.C. --- For a second straight week,
Tusculum College's Simon Holzapfel captured first
place honors as he won the 2009 Wingate University Invitational
Saturday morning on the WU campus. The Tusculum men finished eighth
in the team competition while the Pioneer women placed 10th.
Holzapfel won his second individual crown this season and seventh
career win by posting a time of 26:38 on the 8,000-meter layout.
His 8K time was the third best in school history, giving Holzapfel
the best five times ever by a Pioneer harrier.
The Tusculum women were led once again by graduate student
Robin Smith as she recorded a time of 27:32 on the
5K course for a 17th place finish.
Anderson University claimed both the men and Women's titles. AU
won the Men's title with 51 total points, followed by Wingate (53),
Mount Olive College (72), Francis Marion University (123), Pfeiffer
University (125), Newberry (153), Catawba (178), Tusculum (198),
North Greenville (207) and Coker (223).
In the Women's race, Anderson was victorious with 40 points,
followed by Wingate (58), Pfeiffer (81), USC Aiken (101), Catawba
(110), Coker (139), Barton (189), Mount Olive (192), North
Greenville (206) and Tusculum (234).
David Parham finished 46th in the Men's meet with
a time of 33:41, while Ben Hale posted a time of
34:33 for 52nd place. Elvis Machado finished 53rd
(35:02), followed by Tyler Rogers (71st, 42:58)
and Jason Seaton (72nd, 44:37).
Jessica Figler tallied a 49th place outing with
her time of 32:10. Josie Honaker finished 58th at
33:57, followed by Kelsey Longwell (64th, 35:10),
Danielle Tanner (68th, 38:21), Estefania
Chavez (69th, 38:29) and Storm Vance
(71st, 44:44).
Tusculum returns to action Oct. 10 as they compete at the
Virginia-Wise Invitational.
