TUSCULUM MEN FINISH FIFTH, WOMEN SEVENTH AT SAC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP

CHAPLIN, S.C. --- The Tusculum College men's cross country team finished fifth and the women seventh at the 2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference championship Saturday morning at Crooked Creek Park.

Leading the charge for the Tusculum men was sophomore Simon Holzapfel, who finished second with a time of 26:26 on the muddy 8K course, eight seconds behind SAC Runner of the Year Jayce Watson of Wingate (26:18). The runner-up showing by Holzapfel is the best finish ever by a TC men's harrier in the SAC Championship meet.

Mars Hill captured their 12th straight SAC team championship as its top five runners finished in the top for the Lions 31 total points. Wingate finished second with 50 points, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne (84), Lincoln Memorial (119), Tusculum (123), Carson-Newman (138), Newberry (195) and Brevard (208).

The top seven finishers earned All-SAC First Team honors, while the next seven were named to the Second Team. Joining Watson and Holzapfel on the All-Conference First Team are: Jake Maidens (Lenoir-Rhyne), Justin Baker (Mars Hill), Trey McCain (Mars Hill), Joel Barnett (Mars Hill) and Will Mikolajczak (Mars Hill).

The All-SAC Second Team consists of: David Sanctis (Wingate), Aaron Thomas (Mars Hill), Doug Coats (Wingate), Josh Corbin (Mars Hill), Tesfom Mehari (Wingate), Derrick Lindsay (Lincoln Memorial) and Sean Crawford (Tusculum).

Maidens, who was third overall, was named the SAC Freshman of the Year, while Tusculum's Sean Crawford earned also earned a spot on the SAC All-Freshman Team.

TC rookie Elvis Machado finished 31st with a time of 29:09, while Will Jusino finished 40th with a personal best time of 29:56. Matt Ross placed 57th with a time of 32:59, while Ben Hale tallied a time of 34:20 to finish 64th.

In the women's race, Tusculum senior Alicja Dembna earned All-SAC Second Team honors for a second straight year as she finished ninth with a time of 20:20 on the 5K course.

Lenoir-Rhyne captured the women's title with 32 total points, followed by Wingate (63), Carson-Newman (88), Catawba (92), Mars Hill (113), Newberry (175) and Tusculum (178). Brevard and Lincoln Memorial did not score.

Carson-Newman's Aubrey Morris earned SAC Women's Runner of the Year honors as she covered the course in a time of 18:35. She finished 39 seconds ahead of Kate Griewisch, of Lenoir-Rhyne.

Joining Morris and Griewisch on the All-SAC First Team are: Alycia Andrade (Brevard), Gennilee Eisenmann (Lenoir-Rhyne), Olivia Jacobs (Catawba), Amber Hines (Wingate) and Tiffany Payne (Lenoir-Rhyne). Joining Dembna on the All-SAC Second Team are: Angela Woodward (Mars Hill), Jackie Thompson (Catawba), Alyssa Lowe (Lenoir-Rhyne), Bekah Peeler (Lenoir-Rhyne), Mary-Kathryn Preble (Wingate) and Ashley Condrey (Wingate).

In the women's meet for Tusculum, Katie Shelton finished 55th while running with a leg injury. Kelsey Longwell placed 57th with a time of 26:48, while Estafania Chavez (30:13) and Karen Henniger (30:14) finished 64th and 65th, respectively.
