Pioneers falter against Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. --- The Tusculum women's volleyball team dropped its first South Atlantic Conference match of the season on Friday (Sept. 15) at Carson-Newman.

The Eagles (5-6, 3-0 SAC) rebounded for a four-set victory over the Pioneers (7-4, 3-1 SAC) by scores of 25-27, 25-16, 25-20, 25-11.

Carson-Newman had three players record double-digit kills: Taylor Adams (15), Skylor Weaver (13), and Julia Wheeler (10). The setting duo of Carlee Allbaugh and Blair Cherry each registered 23 assists. Wheeler was responsible for four service aces to lead the Eagles at the line. Bennett McCombs finished with a team-best 18 digs, followed by Allbaugh (12), Wheeler (11), and Cherry (10). At the net, both Emmagrace Cobb and Taylor Keeran are credited with three block assists.

Emiah Burrowes was the lone Pioneer to reach double figures in kills with 14. Madison Adkins (21) and Mya Lewis (11) combined for 32 assists in the outing. Christina Jackson was responsible for the only TU ace in the match. Libero Caley Sosnowski added a match-best 18 digs, ahead of Burrowes' 13. Martina Foster made her mark defensively with six block assists, tying her career-high.

Carson-Newman hit .220 as a team with 58 kills and 22 errors on 164 total attempts. Tusculum hit .110 with 41 kills, 24 errors, and 155 total attacks. The Eagles led the match in assists (56-36), aces (10-1), and digs (76-65), while the Pioneers held the block advantage (10-5).

Tusculum makes the short drive up the interstate to Mars Hill for a Tuesday (Sept. 19) night showdown, scheduled for 6 p.m.
