Pioneers sweep UVA Wise in SAC Volleyball

WISE, Va. --- Tusculum's Emiah Burrowes recorded nine kills and a .333 hitting percentage as the Pioneers swept host UVA Wise 3-0 in South Atlantic Conference women's volleyball action.

Tusculum (2-5, 2-2 SAC) won the match by scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-15 as the Pioneers complete the Virginia road sweep, coupled with last night's 3-0 sweep at league newcomer Emory & Henry.

TU finished the match posting a .282 attack percentage with 31 kills on 85 attempts and seven hitting errors. Camryn Hughes posted six kills, while Carli Pigza accounted for five kills and a match-high 13 digs.

The Tusculum setter duo of Elise Carmichael and Samantha Bunch recorded 13 assists apiece, while libero Sosnowski finished with eight digs in the victory.

UVA Wise was led by Kaylee Scarce with her eight kills, Adison Minor had seven kills and Morgan Blevins was credited with six kills.

In the opening set, the Pioneers jumped out to an 11-4 lead following an attack error by the Cavaliers. UVA Wise followed with a 7-4 run to trim the deficit to 15-11 after kill by Blevins. Tusculum answered with a 4-1 spurt to lead 19-12, which included a pair of Wise errors and a kill from TU's Kaylee Scare. Tusculum pushed its advantage back out to seven on two occasions down the stretch including 23-16. The Cavs cut the TU lead to 23-19, but a pair of errors by the hosts paced the Pioneers to a 25-19 decision in the first frame.

Tusculum fell behind early in the second set, but used a 13-4 run to take a 17-9 advantage, sparked by three kills from Hughes and a Martina Foster service ace. Burrowes would provide a kill on set point as TU prevailed 25-18. Tusculum posted a .417 hitting percentage in the set, which included 12 kills and a pair of blocks.

Tusculum was never challenged in the final frame as the visitors limited the Cavaliers to a minus .083 attack percentage with eight kills against 10 errors and 36 attempts.

The Pioneers return home on Tuesday when they host in-state foe Lincoln Memorial for a 7 p.m. contest at Pioneer Arena.
