Brevard downs Tusculum volleyball 3-1 to gain season split

BREVARD, N.C. --- Savannah Cox recorded 15 kills and a .419 hitting percentage in leading the Brevard College volleyball team to a 3-1 South Atlantic Conference victory over Tusculum College Friday night in South Atlantic Conference action from Boshamer Gymnasium.

The Tornadoes (5-17, 4-11 SAC) win the match by scores of 25-17, 25-21, 20-25, 25-18 and split the season series with the Pioneers (10-12, 5-9 SAC).

BC teammate Rachel Ruble added 12 kills, while setter Erin Barr dished out 43 assists to go along with her eight digs.

Tusculum's Laryssa Welch led the Pioneers with 13 kills and a .379 hitting percentage. Welch also posted five digs and contributed three blocks.  Cassie Born added eight kills, while Aubrey Hawkins finished with seven kills and three blocks. 

Tusculum senior Rachel Garnett eclipsed the 1,000-kill plateau in her collegiate career, becoming only the eighth player in program history to achieve the milestone.  She finished the night with two kills, giving her 1,001 as a Pioneer.

Defensively, the Pioneers finished the match with 91 digs, including 24 from Melissa Mazur, while Shannon Murphy added a double-double with 15 digs and 29 assists.

Brevard hit .213 on the night as a team with 54 kills, 17 errors and 174 attacks. Tusculum hit for a .145 clip with 48 kills, 23 errors and 173 total attacks.  BC edged the Pioneers 5-4 in service aces with Aleksandra Vrvilo leading the way with a pair.  Mazur led TC in serving with her two aces.

Tusculum returns to action on Tuesday night when they host Carson-Newman University for a 7 p.m. contest at Pioneer Arena.
