Tusculum drops 3-1 decision at Mars Hill for first time since 2011

MARS HILL, N.C. --- The Mars Hill University volleyball team recorded 11 blocks, including two solos and four assists from Sally Anne Johnson in the Lions' 3-1 South Atlantic Conference victory over Tusculum College Tuesday night at Stanford Arena.

Mars Hill (4-15, 3-9 SAC) won the match by scores of 25-19, 18-25, 25-18, 25-21.  The Lions split the season series with the Pioneers (10-11, 5-8 SAC) and record their first win over their cross-mountain rivals since Oct. 8, 2011, snapping an 11-match losing streak.

MHU's Mary Kate Griffin led the Lions with 11 kills, while Rebecca Butler finished with 10 kills, six digs and three blocks.

Tusculum's Laryssa Welch led all players with 14 kills, while Mariah Lewis tallied a dozen kills in the loss.  The setter duo of Hallie Zumack and Shannon Murphy posted 27 and 19 assists, respectively. Zumack also made 12 digs to complete her double-double.

Mars Hill finished the match with 41 kills, 15 errors in 145 total attacks for a .179 hitting percentage. Tusculum hit. 130 for the night which included 57 kills and 36 hitting errors.  Mars Hill recorded seven service aces, including two each from Lauren Hochstetler, Elizabeth Kaeser and Griffin.  TC had four aces which two coming from Megan Yopko.

Defensively, the Pioneers finished with 80 digs, including a match-high 23 from sophomore libero Melissa Mazur.

Tusculum returns to action on Friday night when they travel to Brevard College for a 7 p.m. conference match against the Tornados.  TC won last month's meeting in Greeneville.
