Pioneers split Saturday pair to go 2-2 at the SAC/Peach Belt Crossover

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. ---- The Tusculum College volleyball team captured a thrilling four-set win over Augusta University to wrap up the final day of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference / Peach Belt Conference, which was being held this weekend on the campuses of Tusculum College and Carson-Newman University.

The Pioneers (10-10) split its two matches on Saturday as Lander rallied from a two-set deficit and outlasted TC 3-2 in the first match of the day.  In the night-cap, Tusculum bounced back with the 3-1 win over Augusta.

The Pioneers finished the weekend going 2-2 and returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Tuesday night as they take on cross-mountain rival Mars Hill University at 7 p.m. from Stanford Arena.

Lander 3, Tusculum 2

Lander won the first match of the day over Tusculum by scores of 20-25, 14-25, 26-24, 26-24, 16-14.  The Pioneers drop to 1-6 in five-set contests this season, including three times where they were up 2-0 in those outings.

Khiani Kelly led Lader with 16 kills and four blocks, while Halle Dotson accounted for 13 kills and four blocks.  Amanda Medlock finished with 11 kills and 18 digs while setter Sophia Perkins dished out 35 assists and 11 digs in the victory.

Aubrey Hawkins paced five Pioneers in double-figure kills as she tallied 17 for the home team.  Mariah Lewis posted 14 kills and three blocks, while Laryssa Welch, Cassie Born and Rachel Garnett tallied 12, 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

The Pioneers finished the match with 110 digs, including a match-high 41 from All-American libero Melissa MazurHallie Zumack posted a double-double with 36 assists and 17 digs, while Shannon Murphy added 31 assists and 11 digs.

Tusculum 3, Augusta 1

Tusculum's Laryssa Welch tallied a match-high 21 kills and a .432 hitting percentage as the Pioneers held off Augusta.  TC won the match by scores of 27-25, 25-23, 20-25, 27-25.

Senior Rachel Garnett finished with 11 kills and a .321 hitting percentage, while Mariah Lewis added seven kills and four blocks in the victory.

Setter Shannon Murphy contributed 30 assists and 15 digs, while Hallie Zumack added 22 assists and eight digs.

Defensively, Melissa Mazur recorded 28 digs for the home team.

Leading the way for the Jaguars (12-6) were Jordan Bickett and Sammie Baker, as they posted 17 and 11 kills, respectively.
