Queens volleyball rallies to 3-2 win over Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Meredith Jones and Rebecca Cochran each recorded a double-double as Queens University of Charlotte rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat host Tusculum College 3-2 Friday night in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action from Pioneer Arena.
    
The Royals (7-3, 4-1 SAC) won the match by scores of 20-25, 19-25, 25-13, 25-17 and 15-10 to record the road victory.  Tusculum (5-4, 2-3 SAC) will host Catawba College Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., while Queens will be at Mars Hill University on Saturday.

Jones tallied 18 kills and 14 digs, while Cochran accounted for 13 kills, 15 digs and four blocks.  Setter Sydney Kunz dished out 44 assists, while Megan Mancini finished with 23 digs and six assists.

The Tusculum duo of Sarah Bouley and Cassie Born recorded a dozen kills apiece while Shannon Murphy and Hallie Zumack totaled 24 and 23 assists, respectively.  Born also contributed 18 digs, Zumack made 12 digs and Murphy finished with 11.  Melissa Mazur led the TC defense with 20 of the team's 76 digs.

Tusculum used a 9-3 run at the end of the first set to win the opening frame 25-20.  Born tallied four kills and Megan Yopko close out the frame with a service ace on set point.

In the second set with the score tied 6-6, the Pioneers rattled off a 10-2 spurt to led 16-8 following a Laryssa Welch kill.  Tusculum maintained that lead throughout and won the set 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set with the score deadlocked at 7-7, the Royals went on a 7-1 run to take a 14-8 lead thanks to a solo block from Cochran.  The Pioneers trimmed the deficit to 15-13 on to kills from Bouley, Murphy and Welch and a Queens' attack error.  But after a Royals' timeout, the visitors erupted for 10 unanswered points to win the third set 25-13.  Queens hit .222 in the set, while Tusculum posted a minus-.051 hitting percentage including a dozen hitting errors.

The Royals scored the first five points of the fourth set, including back-to-back service aces from Mallory Swarts.  Tusculum answered with an 8-3 run to tie the set at 8-8 following a Welch kill.  The score would go back and forth, including three more ties.  With the set knotted at 12-12, Queens got three straight points on a Raines' kill and two TC hitting errors.  TC cut the deficit to 16-15 following a Mariah Lewis' kill.  But the Royals closed out the frame with a 9-2 run including four unanswered to end the set and win 25-17 and level the match at two sets apiece.

With the score tied 5-5 in the deciding frame, the Royals rattled off four straight points, including a Meredith Jones ace and a Cochran kill to take a 9-5 lead.  TC could only cut the deficit three on a handful occasions down the stretch, but Jones closed out the win with a kill on match point and a 15-10 decision in the final set.  In the frame, Queens hit for a sizzling .550 with 12 kills in 20 attempts and only one error.  

TC hit a respectable .357 in the final set, but finished the match with a .102 attack percentage with 53 kills, 36 errors and 166 total attempts.  Queens ended the match hitting for .185 (53-23-162).

The Royals tallied 67 digs and posted nine total blocks to go along with five service aces, including three from Swarts.
