BREVARD, N.C. --- The Tusculum College
volleyball team celebrated Halloween with a 3-0 victory over
Brevard College on Friday night in South Atlantic Conference action
in Brevard, North Carolina. Megan Hasse led the Pioneers with 11
kills and seven digs.
TC improves its record to 13-13 overall and 12-6 in SAC play.
The Pioneers won the first two sets by identical 25-17 scores and
closed the match out with a 25-19 third-set victory. The Tornados
see their record fall to 10-15 overall and 4-14 in the
conference.
Freshman outside hitter Sabrina Schleuger was one kill away
from a double-double after tallying 11 digs and nine kills.
Freshman setter Shannon Murphy compiled a match-high 38 assists,
while sophomore setter Moriah Jones dug-up a match high 13 balls.
Junior middle blocker Danae Stauffer and sophomore middle blocker
Jaida Allen each finished with seven kills apiece.
Brevard held a 9-7 lead early in the first set before TC went
on a 10-2 run, primarily off the service of Murphy, to take a 17-11
advantage. The Tornados cut the defect to five with the Pioneer
lead at 21-16, but a 4-1 run by Tusculum sealed the set victory.
Stauffer had a pair of kills in the final rallies, and the Pioneers
hit a match-high .361 in the set.
A 6-0 spurt by the Pioneers midway through the second set gave
them their largest lead of the match at the time with the score at
16-7. Both teams exchanged 3-0 runs a few rallies later which
forced both coaches to call a timeout. TC held a 23-17 lead late in
the set, and closed it out with a kill by Schleuger and a service
ace by Jones to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Using the momentum of the eight point second-set victory, TC
raced out to a 10-2 lead in the third with the help of a 9-0 run
off the service of Stauffer. The Pioneers held their first
double-digit lead of the match at 15-5, but an 8-0 run by the
Tornados cut TC's lead to 21-19 late in the set. However, a fourth
game wouldn't be necessary because Tusculum closed out the match
with a 4-0 run, and sealed the victory with back-to-back kills by
sophomore outside hitter Rachel Garnett.
Rachel Ruble paced the Tornados' offense with 10 kills while
Aleksandra Vrvilo had a team-high 12 digs. Erin Barr dished out 24
assists and Hannah Elmore and Kindle Kirkham each added six
kills.
With the victory, Tusculum posted a perfect 4-0 roadtrip and
will close out the regular-season with three home matches starting
on Tuesday (Nov. 4) against Mars Hill at 7 p.m.
