Tusculum volleyball sweeps Brevard 3-0 on Senior Night

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Seniors Alyssa Raterman and Sam Underwood tallied 10 and eight kills, respectively to lead the Tusculum volleyball team to a three set sweep over Brevard Friday on "Senior Night at Pioneer Arena.

With the victory, Tusculum (19-6, 13-4 SAC) clinches the No. 2 seed at next week's Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament, which will be held on the Brevard campus, Nov. 16-18.

The Pioneers won Friday's match by scores of 26-24, 25-15, 25-13 for TC's sixth straight win, while completing the season sweep over the Tornados (10-18, 1-16 SAC).

Underwood's eight kills came on 16 attempts with zero errors for a .500 hitting percentage. Raterman hit ,400 on the evening (10-2-20), while senior Bailee Price finished with five kills, two service aces and 16 digs.

Junior Kassie Voelker had a solid night for the Pioneers as she recorded nine kills, three blocks, and four service aces to go along with her .389 attack percentage. Sophomore Megan Hasse posted a .375 hitting effort with her eight kills and two blocks.

Brevard's Kortney Conner led all players with a dozen digs, while Sydney Yeomans contributed 15 digs in the loss.

TC junior Ashley Sarmiento dished out 39 assists and seven digs, while junior Cailtyn Dean added a match-high 18 digs for the Pioneers.

In the opening set, Tusculum trailed throughout most of the frame, including 21-17 following a kill by Conner. TC answered with a 6-2 run, including back-to-back kills by Raterman as the Pioneers tied the score at 23-all.

Conner posted a kill to get to set-point, but the Pioneers followed with three straight points with kills by Raterman, Hasse and Voelker as TC prevailed 26-24.

Tusculum roared out to a commanding 16-3 lead in the second set, paced by a 9-0 run on Underwood's serve. TC would take the set 25-15 as the Pioneers posted a .233 hitting percentage in the frame, while limiting BC to hit -.033.

The Pioneers accounted for a sizzling .438 hitting performance in the final set as TC utilized an 8-0 run to take 13-5 lead en route to a 25-13 win in the third frame. Underwood, Raterman and Hasse tallied four kills apiece, while Voelker contributed three kills and three of her four aces in the final set.

Senior Melanie Gibson contributed six digs in her start on Friday as the Pioneers hit .270 and recorded seven aces in the victory.

Brevard's Kayla Hanus posted a double-double with her 21 assists and 11 digs, Conner added 10 digs for the Tornados.

The senior quartet of Gibson, Price, Raterman and Underwood were honored in ceremonies following Friday's match.

Tusculum will close out the regular-season on Saturday when they host Lenoir-Rhyne (18-9, 10-6 SAC) for a 2 p.m. league contest at Pioneer Arena. TC will be looking to avenge a 3-2 loss to the Bears from earlier this season.
