Pioneers wrap up regular season with 3-0 sweep at Augusta State

AUGUSTA, Ga. --- Tusculum College wrapped up its 2010 regular season with a 3-0 victory at Augusta State University Saturday afternoon in a non-conference volleyball match. Set scores were 25-22, 25-17 and 25-13.

The Pioneers, ranked third in the latest NCAA Division II Southeast Region poll, will carry a 23-5 overall record into the upcoming Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament, in which they will be the second seed after going 16-2 in conference matches. The Jaguars closed out their regular season with an 11-21 mark.

Tusculum was paced on offense by Allyson Ray, who was the lone Pioneer to reach double figures in kills with 12. Sam Underwood added eight kills and Rhayne Smitherman contributed seven kills and a team-high six blocks. Ashley Sarmiento dished out 31 assists for the Pioneers in the victory.

Caitlyn Dean, who entered the week leading Division II in digs per set with 6.88, boosted her season average by finishing with a match-high 26 digs. Melanie Gibson and Bailee Price also reached double figures in digs with 10 apiece for Tusculum.

Jessica Hanson led Augusta State with 10 kils, while Lisa Bartsch had 27 assists and Lagi Roberts and Andria Tagarelli each had 11 digs for the Jaguars, who hit .033 overall in the match and -.048 over the final two sets.

The Food Lion SAC Tournament will be hosted by Catawba, with action getting underway with four quarterfinal matches on Friday and continuing with semifinal play on Saturday and the championship match next Sunday. Tusculum will play seventh-seeded Mars Hill in the quarterfinals on Friday at 5 p.m.
