Coffaro double-double paces Tusculum to 3-1 win over Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. --- Senior Gina Coffaro recorded a double-double with 19 kills and 29 digs to lead the Tusculum College volleyball team to a come-from-behind four-set win over Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday.

Tusculum (15-10, 6-5 SAC) defeated the Catawba Indians in four sets, falling to Catawba (12-9, 5-6 SAC) 25-22 in the first stanza, before rebounding with wins of 27-25, 25-11, and 25-14 to claim the match.

Coffaro notched a match-high 19 kills on 44 attempts, registering a .409 attack percentage on the afternoon. The senior also turned in a team-best 29 digs in the match. Alyssa Raterman and Carly Swisher broke into double figures in kills with 16 and 15, respectively, each recording attack percentages over .400. Peyton Colclough recorded a season-high 54 assists while Holli Cadenhead joined Coffaro in double-digit digs with 10.

Catawba opened the match with a 25-22 win in the first set, which featured four ties and a pair of lead changes. The set started off with neither team gaining a significant advantage until the Catawba Indians went on a 4-1 run to open an 11-6 lead. Catawba then went on a 10-8 spurt to extend the lead to 21-14 before Tusculum closed the gap to 22-21 with an impressive 7-1 run. The Catawba Indians then quelled the rally and finished the set with a 3-1 spurt to take a 1-0 advantage in the match.

Tusculum rallied back in the second set, notching a 27-25 win in a frame that featured three lead changes and five ties. The Pioneers took command midway through the set when, with the score 10-8 in favor of TC, Tusculum launched a quick 6-0 run to stretch the lead to 16-8. Catawba responded with a 7-0 run to cut the advantage to 16-15, and stayed within striking distance for the remainder of the set, until the Pioneers evened the match at 1-1 with back-to-back points on a block by Swisher and Sam Underwood and a set-ending kill by Swisher.

The Pioneers cruised to a 25-11 win in the third set, opening an early 8-5 lead before launching a 13-5 run to stretch the advantage to 21-10. Tusculum then took the 2-1 lead in the match with a 4-1 spurt to close out the set.

Tusculum closed out the match with a decisive win in the fourth set, opening an early 9-5 lead before launching a 12-7 run which including straight kills by Coffaro. The Pioneers finished off the four-set win with a quick 4-2 spurt to notch the 25-14 victory.

The Pioneers return to the court on Tuesday when they host Carson-Newman College in Pioneer Arena at 6:30 p.m.
