Pioneers split two Senior Day matches

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University women's tennis team lost 4-2 to Catawba University and defeated Emory & Henry College 4-0 in South Atlantic Conference matches Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The 40th-ranked Pioneers (13-7, 7-4 SAC) will conclude their regular season on Monday at 3 p.m. at UVA Wise, and will open the SAC Tournament on Thursday, April 18 at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.

The Indians (13-6, 8-4 SAC) swept doubles from the Pioneers in a match that had three of the six singles matches end early due to player retirement.

The Pioneers earned their singles points at flight three, where Valentina Loretz beat Matilde Moretti 6-4, 6-1, and at flight four as Paulina Loretz won 2-6, 6-2, 2-5 against Isidora Zivkovic who retired late in the third set.

In a match played to clinching, the Pioneers did not lose a set in singles after winning the doubles point against the Wasps (3-16, 1-11 SAC).

In doubles, Valentina Loretz and Johanna Palacio picked up a 6-0 win over Meghan Moore and Molly McMichael at flight three, and Thilda Danielsson teamed with Johanna Selde for a 6-1 win over Nina Williams and Katie Bradley at flight two.

In singles, Selde downed McMichael 6-0, 6-0 at flight six, Ylva Frafjord Landa downed Natalie Bergmann 6-3, 6-0 at flight two, and Danielsson clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Bradley at flight four.
