17th-ranked Charleston holds on for 4-3 win over Pioneers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. --- The Tusculum University women's tennis team battled 17th-ranked University of Charleston before the Golden Eagles emerged with a 4-3 victory Saturday in non-conference action.

The Golden Eagles (4-0) led the match 2-0 before the Pioneers (3-3) rallied with back-to-back singles wins to knot the score. Charleston then won two straight matches to clinch the victory.

Charleston earned a sweep of doubles against Tusculum and won the first singles match to go ahead 2-0. Tusculum got its first victory at flight three, where Paulina Loretz earned a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win over Filippa Larsson. At flight two, Ylva Frafjord Landa was ahead in the third set when Sofilia Krasikova retired with Landa up 2-6, 7-6, 3-0 in the match.

A pair of straight-set victories gave Charleston an insurmountable 4-2 lead in the match, but Johanna Palacio claimed a third point for the Pioneers with a 1-6, 7-5, (10-7) win at flight six over Sara Martinez.

The Pioneers will visit Newberry for their South Atlantic Conference opener on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m.
