Pioneers head to ITA Southeast Regional Championship this weekend

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Members of the Tusculum University women's tennis team will compete at the ITA Division II Southeast Regional Championship, to be held this weekend at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.

Seniors Paulina Loretz and Valentina Loretz will be joined by juniors Elodie Baechler and Leonie Floeth and sophomore Ylva Frafjord Landa in singles play at the ITA Regional. In doubles, Floeth will team with Paulina Loretz while Baechler partners with Valentina Loretz in the tournament.

All five Pioneers have previous experience at the ITA Regional, with Landa advancing to the singles round of 32 before being eliminated last season. Valentina Loretz and Floeth each went 3-1 in last year's regional, while Paulina Loretz was 1-2. Baechler played singles in 2021 as a freshman and finished 1-2 in three matches.

Both Valentina Loretz and Floeth earned a bye into the second round of singles on Friday afternoon, while Baechler, Paulina Loretz and Landa will play opening-round matches Friday morning.

In doubles, Baechler and Valentina Loretz went 3-1 at last weekend's Lincoln Memorial Invitational after being second-team All-South Atlantic Conference in 2023. The duo was 13-5 last season and went a perfect 10-0 in conference play. Floeth and Paulina Loretz played regularly as a team during the 2022 season, going 13-6 overall and 8-2 in SAC competition.

The first two rounds of singles will be contested on Friday, with the round of 32 scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The round of 16 and quarterfinals will be played Sunday afternoon, with the semifinals on Monday morning and the finals Monday afternoon. A consolation bracket for players who lose their opening match will be held Saturday.

Both Tusculum doubles teams earned byes in the first round and will begin play on Saturday morning. Quarterfinals and semifinals in doubles will be played Sunday, with the finals on Monday morning.
