Singles rally gives Pioneers 4-3 win at Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. --- A string of three straight singles victories provided decisive as Tusculum University defeated Limestone University 4-3 in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis Friday afternoon.

The Pioneers (9-4, 5-0 SAC) remain tied atop the SAC standings with Newberry and Wingate after picking up their fourth straight victory. The Saints (5-6, 3-3 SAC) had their four-match winning streak snapped and lost at home for the first time in four matches this season.

Tusculum earned the doubles team point by winning the first two completed matches. At flight one, Tabitha Howe and Paulina Loretz defeated Maria Cecilia Gomez and Camila Molina Barranco 6-2 at flight one, while Valentina Loretz and Elodie Baechler claimed a 6-3 win at flight three over Sara Valentini and Anastasiia Khriapko.

In singles, the Saints used victories from Valentini at flight five and Anamaria Kiszner-Luca at flight one to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Tusculum leveled the score at 2-2 as Paulina Loretz rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Monika Temkova at flight three, and the Pioneers went up 3-2 with Howe beating Gomez 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 at flight two.

Tusculum would clinch the win at flight six, where Ylva Frafjord Landa earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Galilea Amavizca. Molina would earn a straight-set win in her flight four match to cut the final margin to 4-3.

Tusculum will host UVA Wise on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex. The Cavaliers will take a 6-7 overall record and an 0-5 league mark into its match at Limestone on Saturday.
