Pioneers sweep Mars Hill 7-0 in SAC opener

MARS HILL, N.C. --- The Tusculum University women's tennis team opened its South Atlantic Conference schedule with a 7-0 victory over Mars Hill University in a match that began Monday afternoon and was completed on Tuesday due to weather.

The Pioneers (4-3, 1-0 SAC) won the doubles point on Monday and came back Tuesday to sweep singles from the Lions (5-3, 0-1 SAC) without dropping a set.

In doubles, the Pioneers grabbed the team point as Paulina Loretz and Valentina Loretz earned a 6-2 win over Lauren Schave and Maria Razzetta at flight three, while Leonie Floeth and Ylva Frafjord Landa teamed up for a 6-3 win at flight two over Ines Rodriguez and Katie Brzostek.

Singles play saw Landa defeat Schave 6-0, 6-1 at flight five and Floeth beat Elana Mackey 6-2, 6-1 at flight one for a 3-0 Tusculum lead. Paulina Loretz would deliver the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-4 win at flight three over Brzostek.

Closing out singles for the Pioneers were wins by Elodie Baechler over Rodriguez at flight four (8-4), Tabitha Howe at flight two over Amanda Kadiri (6-3, 6-3) and Valentina Loretz over Razzetta at flight six (8-4).

Tusculum will return home to face Bluefield State in a non-conference match on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
