Pioneers sixth in ITA Southeast Region rankings

TEMPE, Ariz. --- The Tusculum University women's tennis team is sixth in the initial Oracle/ITA Division II Southeast Region rankings of the 2021 season, which was released Tuesday.

The Pioneers (7-3, 4-1 South Atlantic Conference) are in a stretch where they face regionally-ranked opponents in three of four matches. Tusculum is 0-2 against ranked opponents, with losses to 15th-ranked North Georgia by a 4-3 score on Feb. 20 and a 6-1 setback to 19th-ranked Queens this past Saturday.

Columbus State is the top-ranked team in the Southeast Region according to the ITA, followed by Flagler, Wingate, North Georgia and Queens in fifth. Following sixth-place Tusculum are Newberry in seventh, trailed by Lenoir-Rhyne, Mount Olive and Barton in 10th. Nationally, Columbus State is 13th this week, trailed by Flagler, Wingate and North Georgia in 14th through 16th place, respectively. Queens is the final ranked team from the Southeast in 18th, with Tusculum among nine teams receiving votes but unranked this week.

Nationally, Indianapolis is the top-ranked team in the ITA poll, followed by Barry, Lynn, Nova Southeastern and Central Oklahoma.

Tusculum hosts Newberry on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex, followed by a matchup with 15th-ranked Wingate on Friday at 10 a.m.
