The Tusculum College Women's tennis team and several of its
members have been recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association by being included in the latest regional and national
rankings.
The Pioneers (19-5) are 47th in this month's national poll, down
three spots from the March survey, and ranked 10th in the latest
ITA Southeast Region rankings. Individually, senior Kealee Heffner
is ranked 18th in the Southeast Region in singles, while the
doubles team of senior Amanda Sumner and sophomore Franziska Funke
is ranked ninth.
Several Tusculum opponents are included in the latest Division II
national rankings, including Northwood at #36, Indiana University
of Pennsylvania at #38 and Wingate at #46. In addition, Georgia
Gwinnett is tied for number one this week in the NAIA national
poll.
Heffner finished the season with an 11-8 overall record, including
a 6-5 mark in South Atlantic Conference matches. The Cumming,
Georgia native sports a 2-2 record against other ranked Southeast
Region players, including a win over #5 Carlotta Nassi of Queens
who is ranked 21st nationally.
The doubles team of Funke and Sumner went 14-7 overall and 8-3 in
conference matches. The pair had an 8-6 record at number-one
doubles and a 6-1 mark in number-two doubles for the Pioneers, and
went 1-1 against Southeast Region ranked teams.
The Pioneers finished the season in second place in the South
Atlantic Conference with a 10-1 league mark, and have placed in the
top three in the conference standings 14 times in their 17 seasons
in the league.
