ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum freshman Franziska Funke has been
selected as the South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Player of
the Week, announced today by the league office. It is her first
career SAC weekly honor.
Funke went a combined 6-0 last week in singles and doubles
play, including two key points in the victory over No. 28 Queens on
Saturday. She knocked off Marta Gonzalez 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles
after teaming with Amanda Sumner in the top doubles flight. The duo
defeated the ninth-ranked team in the Southeast Region, Carlotta
Nassi and Melissa Laing, by an 8-3 margin.
Funke began the week with an 8-0 blanking of Carson-Newman's
Jennifer Ott on Monday and earned a victory over LMU's Priscilla
Bulandres on Thursday. Funke and Sumner were 8-1 winners over the
Eagle duo of Mallory Jackson and Jill Corsato and defeated the
Ralsplitter pairing of Elena Vasilyeva and Gemma Goodland
8-4.
The Bochum, Germany native has had a stellar rookie campaign
for the Pioneers. She is 10-1 in singles playing primarily in the
third position. Funke is a perfect 16-0 in doubles playing
primarily with Sumner in the top flight.
Funke and the rest of the Pioneers will be back in action on
Friday morning when they travel to face Brevard. First serve
