Tusculum knocks off No. 43 West Liberty, 7-2

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. --- Tusculum's Amanda Sumner accounted for a pair of points, including a straight-set singles win for the deciding score in the Pioneers' 7-2 win over 43rd-ranked West Liberty Wednesday morning in the final match of the Spring Break Bash at Hilton Head Island.

The Pioneers (9-2) completed a perfect 3-0 record at Hilton Head Island, while knocking off a nationally-ranked opponent for the second time this season.

Tusculum captured two of the doubles points, including an 8-2 pro set win by the No. 3 pairing of Sumner and Emily Waters as they defeated the duo of Sarah Howells and Alex Barr. TC picked up a huge point at No. 2 doubles when Taylor Patterson and Erin Mills edged Zineb Houssaini and Alex Barr, 8-6.

The Hilltoppers (13-3, No. 4 ranked team in DII Atlantic Region) picked up a point at No. 1 doubles as the Atlantic Region's third-ranked doubles team of Lauren Howard and Raissa Wischi defeated the TC pair of Kate Hutchinson and Megan Buckmaster, 8-5.

Howard, the 12th-ranked singles player in the Atlantic Region, defeated Patterson 6-1, 6-2 at the top flight. But Mills came through with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Wischi, who is listed as the No. 9 singles competitor in the Atlantic Region.

Sumner posted her match-clinching point at No. 6 singles with her 6-0, 6-1 win over Christina Pauley. Waters and Adrienne Kaye posted straight set singles wins, while Buckmaster rallied from a set down to defeat Barr, 5-7, 6-3, (10-3).

Tusculum returns to action on Friday, March 22nd when the Pioneers travel to Wingate to face the Bulldogs in an important South Atlantic Conference match.
