Tusculum hands Milligan first tennis loss of the year

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. --- Katie Hutchinson accounted for a pair of points as the Tusculum women's tennis team knocked off previously undefeated Milligan, 7-2 Wednesday afternoon at the Mathes Tennis Center.

The Pioneers improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Lady Buffs (5-1) suffer their first loss of the year.

Hutchinson and No. 2 doubles partner Adrienne Kaye recorded an 8-5 pro set win over Rachel Hodas and Halie Winfrey. TC's Emily Waters and Amanda Sumner gave the Pioneers their second point of the match with an 8-3 win over Ahmee Kelly and Martha Wells.

Milligan picked up an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles as Grace Sarver and Sarah Rainwater defeated Taylor Patterson and Erin Mills.

In singles action, Tusculum earned wins at the top two flights by Hutchinson and Patterson. Hutchinson defeated Sarver 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 at No. 1 singles, while Patterson won 7-6, 7-5 over Rainwater at the second flight.

Hodas picked up a point for Milligan at No. 3 singles with her 6-3, 6-2 win over Mills. But Tusculum wrapped up the match with straight wins by Waters, Kaye and Megan Buckmaster.

Tusculum returns home to host Newberry on Friday for a 2 p.m. South Atlantic Conference match at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
