Thompson named to Capital One Academic All-District College Division At-Large Team

CLEVELAND, Ohio --- Tusculum College women's tennis player Blake Thompson has been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District IV At-Large College Division Second Team announced College officials Thursday.

The Capital One Academic All-District College Division Team includes all colleges and universities from NCAA Division II, III and NAIA classifications for the sports of tennis, golf, lacrosse, bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, ice hockey, rifle, skiing and water polo.

Thompson, a 5-9 senior from Bristol, Tenn., becomes the fourth player in the program's history to earn Academic All-District recognition.

Thompson graduated from Tusculum earlier this month, majoring in pre-medicine and finished with a 3.61 cumulative grade point average. She has been on the Tusculum Dean's List every semester, as well as the Charles Oliver Gray honor list. In 2008, she was recognized as the Tusculum Academic Freshman of the Year for having the highest GPA.

During her tennis career, Thompson has recorded 93 career victories in singles and doubles, including 36 conference wins. She had a 22-match winning streak in singles from 2009 to 2010. She has helped Tusculum to two South Atlantic Conference championships and one tournament title. The Tennessee High School graduate has been named an ITA Scholar-Athlete three times.

Last month, she was the 2011 recipient of the SAC Scholar Athlete Award for Women's Tennis, becoming only the third player in school history to earn this prestigious accolade.

Thompson has volunteered with Special Olympics, Greeneville Food Pantry, Santa Pal Program, Adopt-A-Family, at a local soup kitchen, and assisted with remodeling a day care center. She also volunteered at a Wellmont Hospital in Bristol, Tenn., where she shadowed doctors and helped organize patient charts.

Members of the Capital One Academic All-District Team are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), which include all colleges and universities from Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Ohio and Michigan comprising District IV.
