Georgia College takes non-conference win over Pioneers

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. --- Georgia College claimed a 3-0 non-conference victory over Tusculum University in women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon.

The Bobcats (7-5-2) scored late in the first half and twice midway through the second half, while finishing with an 18-9 shot advantage over the Pioneers (2-8-3).

Tusculum had the first shot of the match in the second minute, but Joey Garrett's attempt from long range was deflected by the defense and collected by Georgia College keeper Kassidy Fortin. The Bobcats' first shot came from Morgan Amrozowicz in the fourth minute, but Pioneer keeper Grayson Patterson had an easy stop on a slow roller.

The Pioneers had a good look in the 12th minute as an attempt by Alexis Roessler was on target and stopped by Fortin, but she bobbled the shot and Sydney Grant had a chance that went just wide of the post. Amrozowicz had chances in the 21st and 23rd minutes, but sent both shots over the crossbar.

Patterson made three saves in the span of a minute in the 26th minute, including a volley attempt from the top of the box by Lily Markey. In the 34th minute, Carter Drake nearly gave the Bobcats the lead but her shot off a cross ricocheted off the near post.

Georgia College would take a 1-0 lead at 41:27 as a corner kick by Zelia Griffith curled into the goal for her second goal of the season. The Bobcats would carry the lead to halftime while holding a 12-4 advantage in shots over the Pioneers.

In the second half, the Pioneers had a flurry of chances in the 56th minute. Grant's initial shot was stopped by Fortin and went off the far post to Tanna Bookhamer, whose rebound attempt was stopped by the defense while a third try from Wilma Axelsson went high of target.

The Bobcats would stretch their lead to 2-0 at 62:36 as a foul in the box on Amrozowicz would lead to a penalty attempt for Adriana Duque, who beat Pioneer substitute keeper Emma Harriman to her right for her first goal of the season.

Six minutes later, the Bobcats went up 3-0 as a corner kick from Drake was headed home by Mia Palumbo for her fourth goal of the season at 68:32.

Patterson played the first 60 minutes in goal for the Pioneers and made five saves before giving way to Harriman, who played the final 30 minutes and had two saves. Fortin went the entire 90 minutes for the Bobcats and finished with five saves in the match.

Tusculum will play its next two matches at home, starting on Saturday, Oct. 21 against Wingate beginning at 2 p.m. Prior to the match, the Pioneers will hold Senior Day ceremonies.
