Pioneers play to 1-1 draw at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. --- Tusculum University and Newberry College finished in a 1-1 draw in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.

A first-half goal from the Pioneers' Joey Garrett was answered by the Wolves' Sandra Brennan in the second half as Tusculum played its second consecutive draw. The Pioneers (2-7-3, 2-5-2 SAC) outshot the Wolves (4-8-2, 1-5-2 SAC) by a 11-9 margin in the match.

Neither team would have a shot on goal until Garrett's goal at 23:26. She took a pass at the top of the box and headed a ball toward the goal that was played back out to her, and her shot from 20 yards got through the defense and past keeper Ashley Guillot for her second goal of the season.

Newberry would have its first shot in the 27th minute off a corner kick, but Tusculum keeper Grayson Patterson dove to her left to turn aside an effort from the Wolves' Becca Lipp. Patterson would stop a header off a free kick by Jaidyn Jacobs in the 30th minute.

Tusculum had the final shot of the first half, as an effort from 25 yards by Marin Wills was collected by Newberry keeper Aubrey Cripe, who came on in the 26th minute for Guillot.

In the second half, the Wolves tied the match at 1-1 on the first shot of the half as a blast from 30 yards from Brennan found its way into the Pioneer net at 50:40.

Three minutes after the goal, the Pioneers had a chance for the lead by Cripe cradled a shot from Alexis Roessler from close range. Patterson answered in the 57th minute by stopping a one-hopper from Jysabella Tolentino.

Tusculum would have the final chance of the match inside the last 10 seconds, but a shot from distance by Garrett was stopped on a bounce by Cripe.

Patterson finished with four saves in the match for the Pioneers, while Cripe had three stops in relief for the Wolves after Guillot did not make a save in the first 26 minutes.

Tusculum will visit Georgia College for a non-conference match on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Bobcats dropped a 3-1 decision to Columbus State on Saturday to fall to 6-5-2 overall.
