Pioneers pull out 2-1 win over Limestone

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Sydney Grant scored the tiebreaking goal in the second half as Tusculum University defeated Limestone University 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action from Pioneer Field on Saturday.

The Pioneers (2-7-1, 2-5-0 SAC) were outshot 16-5 by the Saints (2-7-0, 1-5-0 SAC) but scored on both of their shots on goal in the match. Tusculum keeper Grayson Patterson finished with seven saves, facing eight Limestone shots in each half.

Tusculum jumped to a quick 1-0 lead at 4:30 as Grant carried down the right side and made a cross to Joey Garrett, who fired a shot past Limestone keeper Rosemary Elliott for her first career goal.

Patterson turned away shots from Freya Jones in the 18th minute and Anae Malbete in the 19th minute, but was unable to stop an attempt from a sharp angle from the Saints' Stina Roswall in the 31st minute, which tied the match at 1-1.

Patterson would make two more saves later in the half, stopping Jones on a header in the 37th minute and making a last-second stop on an attempt from Emma Dufresne in the 43rd minute.

The teams carried the 1-1 deadlock into the 62nd minute, when Grant collected the ball at midfield, outran the Limestone defender and beat substitute keeper Samantha Aguilar-Hopkins for her fourth goal of the season at 61:07.

Limestone pressed for the tie and nearly got it in the 76th minute, but a shot from Lucie Bertrand rang off the far post. The Saints would have two more shots on goal, but Patterson made routine saves on Malbete in the 82nd minute and Emily Torrez in the 87th minute to preserve the lead.

The Saints had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks over the Pioneers, while Limestone was called for 12 fouls to six for Tusculum.

Tusculum will host Emory & Henry on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. at Pioneer Field. The Wasps were idle on Saturday and are 2-5-3 overall with an 0-4-1 record in SAC play.
