SALISBURY, N.C. --- Third-ranked Catawba College defeated Tusculum University 5-0 in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Saturday evening at Frock Field.
Sydney Jimmo had two goals and an assist, all in the second half, as the Indians (7-0-0, 3-0-0 SAC) built a 2-0 lead by halftime and added three goals in the first 16 1/2 minutes of the second half.
Catawba outshot Tusculum 34-6 in the match, putting 15 shots on the Pioneer goal. Grayson Patterson finished with nine saves for the Pioneers, while Ashley Hughes had one save in 70 minutes and Gabby Cossette made one stop in 20 minutes for Catawba.
Jimmo scored at 48:11 and 61:11, both off assists from Hannah Dunn, while Helen Summerell, Bree Ehmer and Lillie Rusher also scored for the Indians.
Catawba had pressure from the opening minute, when a shot from Alexah Fite went off the crossbar. Patterson made her first save of the evening on a shot from Jimmo in the fifth minute. Tusculum's first shot was in the 11th minute from Alexis Roessler, but was blocked by the defense.
The Indians went up 1-0 at 11:25 as Ehmer connected with Summerell for her fourth goal of the season. Catawba had a flurry of chances in a span of four minutes later in the half, but Patterson made three saves and the defense knocked down a potential goal off a corner kick to keep the Indians' lead at 1-0.
Tusculum had its first shot on goal in the 38th minute, as Tanna Bookhamer's attempt was stopped by Hughes. Six minutes later, Catawba would go ahead 2-0 just 1:17 before intermission as Ehmer scored her fourth of the season off an assist by McKenzee Johnson.
In the second half, Jimmo collected her 10th goal of the season at 48:11 off assists from Dunn and Maria Rayburn, and Rusher made it 4-0 at 53:27 with an assist to Jimmo. Catawba's lead would increase to 5-0 as Jimmo scored her second of the afternoon at 61:11 from Dunn and Summerell.
Tusculum's second and final shot on goal of the match would come in the 74th minute, as an attempt from A'jaylah Yates was saved by Cossette.
Catawba had a 17-1 edge in corner kicks over Tusculum in the match, while the Pioneers were called for seven fouls to six by the Indians.
Tusculum will return home to take on Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. The Railsplitters (5-2-1, 1-0-1 SAC) earned a 1-0 home victory over Newberry on Saturday.
