Carson-Newman claims victory over Pioneers in first of two meetings

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Emilee Futrell and Addie Henry each scored two goals to lead Carson-Newman University to a 5-0 victory over Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action at Pioneer Field Monday night.

Savannah Fields also scored for the Eagles (2-1-0, 2-1-0 SAC), who outshot the Pioneers (2-3-1, 2-1-1 SAC) by a 17-10 margin and led 2-0 at halftime. Futrell scored in the eighth and 64th minutes while Henry's goals came in the 29th and 47th minutes, with Fields closing the scoring in the 70th minute.

Tusculum had the first two shots in the match, on a chip by Brianna Garcia from 15 yards in the opening minute and from Brooke Radcliffe in the fourth minute. The Eagles had shots from Futrell in the fifth minute and Henry in the sixth, but both were easily collected by Tusculum keeper Cece Mortensen.

At 7:30 of the first half, Futrell opened the scoring as she took a cross from the right side by Makayla Garner and blasted a shot from 30 yards past Mortensen for a 1-0 Carson-Newman lead. At 28:11, the Eagles went up 2-0 after Mortensen smothered back-to-back shots from Futrell, who then passed out to a wide-open Henry for the goal.

The first chance of the second half resulted in Henry's second goal, as she gathered a free ball and blasted a shot from 40 yards that went high to the corner and gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Tusculum's best scoring chance of the match was in the 56th minute, but Cristina Iranzo shot just wide following a corner kick from Kaitlyn Watson.

The Eagles nearly added another goal in the 58th minute, as Garner got behind the defense and around a challenging Mortensen. However, the Pioneers' Kenzie Ellenburg was able to hustle back and clear Garner's shot from crossing the line.

Futrell would make it 4-0 at 63:30 on a shot from 25 yards to the left post, and Fields closed the scoring at 69:04 as a pass from Kristina Markfort down the right side was centered by Molly Bukiewicz to Fields. Tusculum had one final chance to dent the scoreboard, but Jamila Thombs just missed the upper left corner from 20 yards out with under 11 minutes left.

Tusculum finished the match with a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks, and both sides were whistled for nine fouls apiece. Shot attempts were even at 6-6 in the second half after the Eagles had an 11-4 edge in the opening 45 minutes.

Mortensen played nearly 73 minutes in goal for the Pioneers and recorded five saves before giving way to freshman Grayson Patterson, who made a save on the Eagles' Emma Daniels with one minute left in her collegiate debut. Lilly Ebner went the distance for Carson-Newman and had six saves for the evening.

The teams will meet again Thursday in Jefferson City for the return leg of the two-game set. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
