Two second-half goals push Pioneers past Anderson, 2-0

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum scored two goals in a span of 4 1/2 minutes in the second half to defeat Anderson 2-0 in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.

Rachel Roberts scored in the 68th minute and Jordan Newby followed in the 73rd minute for the Pioneers (5-2-0, 3-1-0 SAC), who outshot the Trojans (2-4-1, 1-2-0 SAC) by a 16-1 margin.

Tusculum had 11 shots in the first half, including five from Carlie Thornber and three from Newby, but put just three shots on goal for Anderson keeper Abby Helm to stop.

In the second half, the Trojans nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute, but the offsides flag negated a would-be goal for Anderson. Tusculum almost broke the tie in the 67th minute, but a shot from the Pioneers' Katja Andersson off a corner kick was cleared off the line by the Trojans' Kristin Herbert to keep the match locked at 0-0.

However, Tusculum would score less than 90 seconds later as Carly Culler played a pass to Kate Guildford in the middle, who delivered a perfect ball down the left side to Roberts for a blast from the top of the 18 that sailed over Helm with 22:01 left.

The Pioneers added an insurance goal with 17:40 to play as Culler's throw to the box was played by Guildford back to Andersson, and her shot was flicked by Newby past Helm to extend the Tusculum lead to 2-0. The Trojans' lone shot of the match came on a header with 2:40 left that was easily controlled by Pioneer keeper Hannah Graham, who posted her third shutout of the season.

In addition to its lopsided edge in shots, Tusculum had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Pioneers were called for eight fouls to seven by the Trojans, and received the only card of the match. Helm finished with four saves in goal for Anderson.

The Pioneers will resume action next Saturday, Sept. 30 with a 3:30 SAC match at Newberry.
