LIVINGSTON, Ala. --- The Tusculum women's soccer team opened its 2017 season with a 3-0 victory over the University of West Alabama Friday night.
Brooke Radcliffe and Kate Guildford scored first-half goals and Cheyenne Upton added an insurance tally late in the second half for the Pioneers (1-0-0), who outshot the Tigers (0-1-0) by a 16-14 margin.
After the Tigers' Marie Dreezen hit the post on a header in the 8th minute, Radcliffe put the Pioneers on the board at 9:01 of the first half off an assist by Carly Mill. Guildford converted on a throw-in from Carly Culler to push the Tusculum advantage to 2-0 with 31:41 elapsed in the opening half. In the second half, the Tusculum defense limited West Alabama to four shots on goal, and Upton tacked on an insurance goal with 3:01 left off a feed from Sonja Ballmert.
West Alabama had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks over the Tusculum, while the Pioneers were called for 11 fouls to 10 by the Tigers. West Alabama was flagged twice for offsides and Tusculum was called once.
Hannah Graham made six saves to record her first career shutout for the Pioneers, while Jenni Aarniva had seven stops for the Tigers.
Tusculum will continue its season-opening road trip to Alabama on Sunday with a 2 p.m. start against Alabama-Huntsville
