Tusculum defeats Brevard 1-0 for fourth straight shutout victory

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Carly Mill scored in the sixth minute and the Tusculum College defense made it stand up in a 1-0 victory over Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Wednesday night at Pioneer Field.

The Pioneers (7-2-2, 5-0-1 SAC) poosted their fourth consecutive shutout victory and moved into sole possession of first place in the SAC, one point ahead of Catawba which lost 1-0 at Queens on Wednesday.

Miriah Martin made two saves for her fifth shutout of the season and the 12th of her career, while extending her streak of consecutive scoreless minutes to 415 minutes. Tusculum outshot Brevard (3-7-0, 0-6-0 SAC) by a margin of 14-8, and had a 7-2 edge in shots on goal in the contest.

The Pioneers scored on the first shot of the game at 5:47 of the opening half, as Nyssa Garrison had a run down the left side and crossed to Mill, who directed the pass to the far post behind Tornados keeper Laurel Neuzil for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 Tusculum lead.

Tusculum had a pair of chances in the 26th minute, but a header by Carlie Thornber was blocked by the Brevard defense and Kelli McCalla's follow-up shot went high of the goal. The Pioneers had their final chance of the half at the 30th minute, but a shot by Rachel Roberts sailed wide of the Brevard net.

The Tornados picked up their first shot in the 16th minute, but did not put one on goal until the 44th minute by Anita Maryskova. Tusculum outshot Brevard 7-4 in the first half and had a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.

Brevard had its best scoring chance of the match in the 50th minute, as Caroline David pounced on a turnover in the Tusculum end and had a shot from medium range. However, Martin collected the shot for her only save of the second half and preserved the 1-0 Pioneer advantage.

The Pioneers tried to build on their slim lead in the final 10 minutes, but Olivia Kilgore was denied by Neuzil from long range on a free kick in the 82nd minute. With exactly six minutes to play, Mill nearly netted her second goal of the match but Brevard defender Alex Perri cleared her shot off the line to keep the margin at 1-0.

Brevard had a free kick from midfield with less than a minute left, and had a couple chances to gather loose balls in the box following the restart, but the Pioneer defense cleared their end as time ran down on the match.

Tusculum had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks over Brevard, while the Tornados were called for 13 fouls to eight by the Pioneers. Tusculum was also flagged three times for offsides, once which negated a would-be Pioneer goal late in the first half.

Neuzil finished with five saves in goal for the Tornados, who have been shut out five times in their six conference losses including four by scores of 1-0.

Tusculum is scheduled to return to action Saturday at 1:30 p.m. on the road at Coker in a SAC match. The impact of Hurricane Matthew on South Carolina could result in the match being rescheduled. Visit tusculumpioneers.com and other Pioneer social media outlets for updated information.
