Late PK lifts Union to 1-1 draw with Tusculum

JACKSON, Tenn. --- Tusculum College and Union University played to a 1-1 draw in non-conference women's soccer action Friday night at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex.

The Pioneers (2-1-1) took the lead in the 77th minute on a goal by Carly Culler, but the Bulldogs (0-2-1) knotted the score with just 2:28 remaining on a penalty kick goal by Sarah Hershbain.

Union finished the match with a 14-12 advantage in shot attempts over Tusculum, but the Pioneers put nine shots on goal to four by the Bulldogs. Three of Tusculum's shots on goal came in the second 10-minute overtime period, despite playing a man down due to a red card, but Union keeper Kristen Francis came up with the saves to preserve the deadlock.

After a scoreless first half that saw both teams take four shots at goal, the Pioneers grabbed a 1-0 lead at 76:52 as Culler took a feed from Carly Mill and fired from outside the goal box to the bottom right corner for her first goal of the season.

Trailing by a goal, the Bulldogs put pressure on the Pioneer goal and caught a break at 87:32 when a red card was issued to Tusculum. Hershbain delivered the equalizer for Union, sending the match to overtime tied at 1-1.

Playing a man up, Union had the only shot of the first overtime period. In the second extra period, the Pioneers came to life with a flurry of shots on goal. However, two attempts by Nyssa Garrison and one by Cheyenne Upton were turned away by Francis to keep the score tied.

Tusculum goalkeeper Miriah Martin finished the match with three saves, while Francis had eight stops for Union. The Pioneers were called for 10 fouls to five by the Bulldogs, and had the only corner kick of the match.

The Pioneers return to action Sunday at Alabama-Huntsville, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern time.
