Carly Whitman scored in the 55th minute as Tusculum College
defeated Coker College 1-0 in a South Atlantic Conference Women's
soccer match Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
Whitman scored on a loose ball in front of the goal with 35:36
remaining as the Pioneers (7-6-3, 5-2-2 SAC) posted their fifth
consecutive home shutout. Tusculum has not allowed a goal at
Pioneer Field since Sept. 10 against Belmont Abbey, a span of 509
minutes, 4 seconds.
Marissa Williams recorded her eighth shutout of the season for the
Pioneers by making four saves in goal. Both teams took eight shots
at goal, with the Cobras (4-11-1, 1-8-1 SAC) recording seven of
their eight shots in the second half.
Tusculum had several strong scoring chances in the first half, but
Coker keeper Lizz Morris made a pair of smothering saves on Taylor
Lewis and another on Patti Jordan to keep the Pioneers off the
scoreboard.
The Pioneers finally got on the board following a corner kick from
Amy Morford, which was headed in front by Taylor Lewis and
deflected off Olivia Kilgore to Whitman, who nudged the ball over
the line to give Tusculum a 1-0 lead with 35:36 left.
Coker applied pressure following the goal, but Williams came up
with three saves in the final 30 minutes to preserve the lead. The
Cobras' last chance came on a shot by Danielle Goerler with 3:49
left that sailed wide of the frame.
Morris finished with six saves for the Cobras, who were called for
nine fouls to five for the Pioneers. Tusculum had a 4-3 advantage
in corner kicks and were flagged for offsides four times.
The Pioneers will host local rival Carson-Newman in a SAC match on
Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Pioneer Field in the final home match of the
2013 regular season.
