Tramicka James scored on a rebound with 2:16 left as Tusculum
College defeated Catawba College 1-0 in South Atlantic Conference
Women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
The Pioneers (11-1-2, 6-0-1 SAC) remain in second place in the SAC
standings heading into Wednesday's showdown with first-place
Lenoir-Rhyne at Pioneer Field. The victory extended Tusculum's
unbeaten streak to 12 matches (10 wins, 2 ties), and the loss was
the second in a row for Catawba (8-6-0, 3-4-0 SAC) after five
consecutive wins.
With the teams locked in a defensive battle and overtime looming,
the Pioneers scored the winning goal when Alisha Pugh played a long
ball to Jana Linke, who sent a quick pass through to James.
The senior broke in and beat Indians keeper Angelica Pawlowski, but
the ball caromed off the right post. James followed her shot and
calmly deposited the rebound for her 10th goal of the season and a
1-0 Pioneer lead in the 88th minute.
James had the only good scoring chance of the match other than her
goal, but Pawlowski pulled in her shot from 10 yards in the 10th
minute.
Tusculum finished the match with a 12-4 edge in shots over Catawba,
including a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams took five
corner kicks in the contest.
Marissa Williams earned her sixth shutout of the season for the
Pioneers by making one save in goal. Pawlowski finished with four
stops for the Indians.
Wednesday's match against Lenoir-Rhyne will begin at 5 p.m. at
