Taylor Lewis and Tramicka James each scored a goal and Tusculum
College survived a late Carson-Newman surge to claim a 3-2 victory
in South Atlantic Conference Women's soccer action Wednesday
night.
Lewis scored for the fifth straight game and James tallied for the
third straight contest as the Pioneers (9-1-1, 4-0-0 SAC) extended
their unbeaten streak to nine matches (8-0-1) and won their fifth
straight game.
Jana Linke also scored for the Pioneers, who led 3-0 before the
Eagles (2-8-0, 0-4-0 SAC) struck for two goals in a five-minute
span late in the second half to pull within 3-2.
James' goal was her ninth of the season and her fourth in the
Pioneers' last three matches. She has scored at least one point in
five straight contests and the Pioneers have won all nine games in
which she has registered a goal or an assist.
Lewis boosted her season goal total to six with her goal in the
70th minute which gave Tusculum its 3-0 lead. Her goal streak has
coincided with the Pioneers' five-game winning streak, during which
they have outscored their opponents by a 19-4 margin.
Danna Stringle and Meleya Garrison scored for the Eagles, who were
outshot 22-7 and saw the Pioneers take all eight corner kicks in
the match.
The Pioneers nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute when Monica
Perez was awarded a penalty kick, but Eagle keeper Kendra Ivans
made the save to preserve the tie.
Linke finally came through for Tusculum at 35:21 when she netted
her third goal of the season off a header from the right side of
the box.
Stringle nearly tied the game in the 61st minute for Carson-Newman,
but her shot went off the crossbar. Less than two minutes later,
James came through with a goal at 62:29 off an assist from
Gabrielle Whitt for a 2-0 Pioneer lead.
At 69:24, Lewis delivered a 3-0 lead on a shot from close range
following a pass by Kim Brown. Tusculum carried the lead until the
78:57 mark, when Stringle was awarded a penalty kick and scored to
put Carson-Newman on the board.
Garrison brought the Eagles within 3-2 at 83:45 on a shot from 20
yards, but the Pioneer defense would not permit another shot over
the final six minutes.
Marissa Williams made two saves in goal for the Pioneers to earn
the win. After making five saves in the first half, Ivans gave way
to Tiarna McKenna, who made four saves in the second half for the
Eagles.
Tusculum continues its SAC schedule Sunday afternoon when Newberry
visits Pioneer Field for a 2 p.m. match.
