WINGATE, N.C. --- The Tusculum College women's soccer team
fell to Wingate University 3-0 on Saturday in a South Atlantic
Conference match. Wingate improves to 12-5 overall and 4-3 in SAC
play, while Tusculum falls to 9-7-1 and 4-3 in conference
action.The two sides played a scoreless first half as the Bulldogs edged the Pioneers in shots 8-6 in the first 45 minutes of play. Wingate's Kerstin Williams opened the scoring with her ninth goal of the season in the 62nd minute, taking possession of a loose ball in the area and knocking it into the back of the net off a Tusculum defender.
The Bulldogs widened the advantage midway through the 81st minute on Lisa Service's first goal of the season, as the senior defender curled a free kick into the far corner from 20 yards out to put Wingate up 2-0. Wingate stretched the lead to 3-0 in the opening seconds of the 88th minute when Kelsey McCormick found the back of the net for the second time this season off a lead pass from Kelly Adams at the top of the area.
The Bulldogs outshot the Pioneers 20-11 in the match with a 12-5 edge in attempts on goal in the second half. Danielle Tanner led the Pioneers with five shots, while Kelly Barron added two attempts on goal in the match.
Vanessa Fyffe made the start between the pipes for the black and orange, making seven saves in 82 minutes of action. Megan Kurtz entered the match in the 82nd minute, making two saves in the final eight minutes. Wingate's Kathryn Smith made five saves to record her fifth clean sheet of the season.
Tusculum returns to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 29 when it travels to Charlotte, N.C. for a 6 p.m. match against Queens University (N.C.).
