EARLY GOALS LIFT Women's SOCCER OVER CHOWAN

Claire Duncan MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Tusculum College women's soccer team scored twice in the opening ten minutes against Chowan University on Sunday afternoon, cruising to a 2-0 shutout victory to improve to 8-5-1 on the season, while Chowan drops to 5-9-1 on the season.

Senior forward Kelly Barron scored the eventual match-winner in the sixth minute, notching her 13th goal of the season on a rebound of Michelle Meade's shot to put the Pioneers up 1-0 early in the match. Freshman defender Claire Duncan found the back of the net for the second time this season midway through the ninth minute off a Nicole Ferris corner, which was then fed to Duncan by Danielle Tanner for the early 2-0 advantage.

The Pioneers held the advantage for the remainder of the match despite a late surge by the Hawks. Tusculum outshot Chowan 25-5 in the match, led by Barron's six chances and Duncan's career-high four shots.

Vanessa Fyffe and Megan Kurtz each played 45 minutes in goal for the Pioneers, combining for four saves. Meade notched her team-leading seventh assist in the match as Tanner added her sixth helper of the season as well.

The Pioneers return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 18 when they host Catawba College in a South Atlantic Conference matchup. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
