Women's SOCCER RECEIVES FIVE COMMITMENTS FOR 2009 SEASON

Tusculum Pioneers GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College women's soccer program has received five additional commitments for the 2009 season, announced head coach Mike Joy on Wednesday, including three goalkeepers and two defenders.

"This last group of signings will add much needed defensive help to our program," said Coach Joy. "We have added some quality keepers and defenders with these late signings, which will be added to the offensive standouts that we signed in February."

Amber Marceau, a 5-7 defender from Grayson, Ga., joins the Pioneers as a transfer from Young Harris College where she appeared in 15 matches as a freshman. Marceau was named the team's defensive MVP for her efforts, as well as being recognized on the Adidas Junior College Division 1 All South Region Team. The junior full back also won a state championship as a member of her club team in her hometown of Grayson, Ga.

Chelsea Slayter, a 5-7 defender from Elkhart, Ind., was a four-year letter-winner at Elkhart Central High School in Elkhart, Ind. Slayter was named the team's Offensive Player of the Year last season, and was a member of Elkhart's sectional championship squad in 2005. She has also played at the club level with the Middlebury Northern Magic.

Marjaana Kaaresvirta, a 5-9 goalkeeper from Turka, Finland, brings a wealth of international playing experience to the Pioneers, having competed on the world stage as a member of Finland's U-19 and U-20 national teams. Kaaresvirta appeared in six matches while competing in the U-19 UEFA European Championships.

Jordan Rachael Jennings, a 5-8 goalkeeper from Asheville, N.C., was a key member of the Roberson High School which posted a 28-1 record in 2008 and advanced to the North Carolina State Championship match. Roberson set state and national records that season for shutouts in a season, including a streak of 25 consecutive clean sheets. Jennings recorded 28 shutouts in her first three seasons with the Rams, including 12 clean sheets in 2008.

Stephanie Bachtle, a 5-9 goalkeeper from Tampa, Fla., played at Sickles High School in Tampa where she saw time as both a keeper and a forward. She has also played at the club level with Omega Select Black, Clearwater Galactics, and Everton Soccer Club. Bachtle also competed on the international stage in four friendly matches in August of 2008 against national and country select teams as a member of Omega Select.

"With the return of six starters from last year's team, these commitments will help us compete at the level we have been accustomed to," said Joy.

Tusculum finished the 2008 season with a 10-9-1 record en route to its 11th consecutive winning season under the tutelage of Coach Joy.
