Hayley Bartlett tied a school single-game record with eight
points and Madison Malone equaled the program mark with five
assists as Tusculum College defeated North Greenville University
19-3 in non-conference Women's lacrosse action Thursday afternoon
at Pioneer Field.
Bartlett had four goals and four assists to match the record of
eight points set by Kelsey Crow and Cheyenne Bray against Chowan on
Feb. 28, 2015 while Malone equaled the mark of five assists set by
Bray last season and equaled two other times, including once by
Malone.
The Pioneers (6-1) had two six-goal runs and a seven-goal run and
finished the game with a 36-11 advantage in shots over the
Crusaders (4-4). Savannah Elliott added three goals and three
assists while Bray had three goals for Tusculum, which led 8-2 at
halftime before outscoring North Greenville 11-1 in the second
half.
Tusculum scored the first goal of the match just 42 seconds into
the first half as Rachel Holmes tallied from Claire Stanton, then
Bray and Bartlett hooked up for a pair of goals less than two
minutes apart for a 3-0 Tusculum lead. The Pioneers built the lead
to 6-0 on goals by Calyn Kelly, Elliott and Malone before the
Crusaders got on the board on goals from Sarah Smith and Natalie
Dufresne. Erin Sims scored with six seconds left in the half to
give the Pioneers a six-goal lead at the half.
In the second half, the Pioneers scored four times in the first
three minutes as Bray, Bartlett, Malone and Brooke Hardy found the
back of the net. Monica Colwell scored with 24:47 left to bring the
Crusaders within 12-3, but the Pioneers put the game away with
seven straight goals. Bartlett had three goals and two assists
during the run while Elliott had two goals and an assist and
Bartlett added an assist.
Crow finished with a pair of goals for the Pioneers, with Sims
adding two goals and an assist. Kelly had a goal and an assist
along with Holmes, with Stanton adding a pair of assists. Tusculum
put 30 of its 36 shot attempts on net, while the Pioneer defense
limited the Crusaders to eight shots on goal in the game.
On defense, Malone had seven draw controls and three ground balls
for the Pioneers, while Christen Craig and Bray had three ground
balls apiece. Sierra Haas led Tusculum with two caused turnovers
and also had two ground balls, while Hardy, Bray and Kelly each had
a pair of draw controls. As a team, Tusculum finished with 19 draw
controls to five for North Greenville.
Colwell was the leader on ground balls for North Greenville with
seven, and she also had a game-high five caused turnovers. Emily
Colson had three draw controls for the Crusaders, with three ground
balls credited to Candace Petit.
Tusculum's Brooke Wagner played all 60 minutes in goal and made
five saves for the Pioneers, while Sydney Taylor played just over
57 minutes and had 11 saves for the Crusaders.
The Pioneers return home Saturday to host Newberry in a South
Atlantic Conference game beginning at 12 noon at Pioneer Field.
Last year, Tusculum went to Newberry and earned a 15-7 victory
during the team's inaugural season.
