Kelsey Crow and Savannah Elliott scored four goals apiece to
lead Tusculum College to a 20-9 victory over Brevard College in
South Atlantic Conference Women's lacrosse action Saturday
afternoon.
Madison Malone had three goals and two assists and Hayley Bartlett
added two goals and two assists for the Pioneers (5-1, 1-0 SAC),
who outscored the Tornados 9-3 in the second half. Tusculum has
scored at least 19 goals in all five of their victories this
season.
Caitlyn Nemeth led the Tornados (1-2, 0-1 SAC) with four goals
while Ashlea Mann and Kelly Kearnan added two goals apiece.
However, Brevard was outshot 40-23 by Tusculum and committed 20
turnovers, of which 12 were caused by the Pioneer defense.
Tusculum scored the first goal of the match as Rachel Holmes found
the back of the net with 3:41 elapsed in the first half. Nemeth
then scored twice in 13 seconds and Mann added another as the
Tornados tallied three times in 48 seconds to go on top 3-1 with
24:43 remaining in the half.
Still trailing 3-1 with less than 20 minutes to go in the half, the
Pioneers scored six straight over a span of eight minutes to take a
7-3 lead. Malone scored twice in less than a minute to tie the game
at 3-3, and Erin Sims added a free-position tally to give the
Pioneers a 4-3 advantage. Malone followed with her third of the
game for a 5-3 Tusculum lead, with Cheyenne Bray and Kelsey Crow
adding to the run.
The Pioneers scored four more goals in the final 7 1/2 minutes of
the first half, from Sims, Crow, Elliott and Bray, to take an 11-6
lead into halftime. Tusculum outshot Brevard 23-11 in the first
half and went 3-for-5 on free-position shots as a team.
Goals from Bartlett and Calyn Kelly extended the Tusculum lead to
13-6 with 28:02 remaining in the game, with another goal from Kelly
with 23:22 left giving the Pioneers a 14-7 advantage. After Kearnan
scored her second of the day to bring the Tornados within 14-8, the
Pioneers scored four straight times as Elliott, Bartlett, Crow and
Elliott again all had tallies during the run. Tusculum finished the
scoring as Elliott scored her fourth of the game with 8:23 left and
Crow netted her third with 2:50 on the clock.
Bartlett had a team-high five ground balls for the Pioneers, while
Malone had three ground balls and four draw controls. Brooke Hardy
also had four ground balls for Tusculum, with three each from Kelly
and Elliott. Kelly, Malone and Claire Stanton led the way for the
Pioneers with two caused turnovers apiece.
Pacing the defense for Brevard with Nemeth, who had six draw
controls and five ground balls. Allie McMillan also had four draw
controls for Brevard, which finished the game wit an 18-13
advantage on draws.
Brooke Wagner made 13 saves in goal for the Pioneers in the
victory, while Shelby Arsenault had 18 saves for the Tornados.
Tusculum will be home for its next three contests, beginning
Thursday against North Greenville in a match that is scheduled to
begin at 4 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
